How to Clean Ugg Boots

General Cleaning

The following instructions on how to wash ugg boots are a great idea not only to remove various types of stains but also to prolong the life of your boots.

  1. Brush

Brush your ugg boots with a stiff brush to remove surface grime and dirt. If you don’t do this you will only end up washing the dirt and grime into the leather

  2. Gently Scrub

With a damp cloth gently scrub the entire boot. The aim is to use the minimum amount of water. Too much water and your ugg boots will stretch and lose their shape.

  3. Stuff

Stuff socks or newspapers inside your boots until the shape appears normal. We don’t want your boots to sag which is much more likely when the boots are damp.

  4. Allow to dry

Sit the boot in a dry cool place for 24-48hrs. Do not wear the boots again until they are completely dry or they will stretch. Why can’t you dry ugg boots in the sun or a dry? The heat will cause the boots to wrinkle and stretch, the leathers will be damaged. Ugg boots are super warm but the leathers are quite soft so a little bit of care will go a long way. If the stains are still there move on to the instructions below

Remove dirt and grime from uggs

You do not need an ugg boot cleaner to clean ugg boots. A suede or leather shampoo will work perfectly and can be found in the shoe section of just about any retail store.

  1. Follow Step 1

Follow step 1 from above instructions to remove surface grime and dirt from your ugg boots.

  2. Apply Suede Cleaner

Mix the leather cleaner and water, following the directions on the bottle for the mixture. Give the boots a good scrub with a sponge and remember to scrub over all parts of both boots. The shampoo will affect the appearance of the boot and so the boots may not look consistent in colour if you only scrub the stain.

  3. Stuff and Dry

Follow steps 3 and 4 from above.

Tackling Stubborn Stains

Protein Based - Milk, Eggs, Mud, Glue, Blood etc

More stubborn stains require a little more work, the trick is to get to the stain as soon as possible. The longer the stain remains on your uggs the more difficult and risky removal becomes.

  1. With a pencil rubber, gently rub the stain affected area
  2. Use a wet cloth to soak the stain affected area.

Leave it for a couple of hours then re-soak it and leave it for a couple more hours.

  3. Follow the dirt and grime cleaning instructions above (using suede cleaner/shampoo)
  4. If the stain still is still there place a few drops of vinegar on the stain.

Don't rub the vinegar in, it may spread the stain. Leave the vinegar there for 5 minutes and then use a paper towel to soak up the vinegar.

Fat Oil and Grease based stains

  1. With chalk, talcum powder or cornstarch dust the affected area

The powders will soak up the oil. Leave the boots overnight. If the stain isn't gone you can perform this step a couple of times.

  2. Follow steps 2-4 from the protein stain removal instructions above

Deodorize your ugg boots

Why do ugg boots smell? Typically fake ugg boots smell more often than twin face merino sheepskin boots. This is because the cheaper materials don’t breathe which leads to sweating and bacteria.

  1. Clean with Suede Cleaner

Follow the cleaning instructions for water and snow marks above

  2. Add Baking Powder

Put 1 tea spoon of baking powder in each ugg boot

  3. Stuff and Dry

Leave the boots for 24-48 hrs then turn the boots upside down to remove the excess baking powder

Repair rips and tears

We offered a service to repair rips, tears and replace soles. The average cost of these repairs ran above half the replacement cost of a new pair, suffice to say we no longer provide this service. Holes are typically caused by buying boots which are too small or letting your nails grow too long. If you have a rip or tear feel free to contact us and politely request a discount code.

Can you dry clean ugg boots?

Do not dry clean ugg boots or wash them in a washing machine. The leather will will stretch and lose shape. Do not dry your ugg boots in a clothes dryer, in front of a heater or in direct sunlight. They will shrink and lose there shape. Sheepskin is extremely durable and if kept dry will last many years.
